The Favorite T-Shirt: 4 Popular Types to Have in Your Wardrobe

As I wrote in a previous article HERE, the t-shirt is an indispensable item in every man’s day-to-day wardrobe. Depending on its design, it can be worn in many combinations, from casual to sophisticated. For two centuries, since it entered men’s wardrobes, this piece has gone on to conquer the world.

About the most popular t-shirts and how to wear them with style — you’ll find a summary below!

1. The Polo T-Shirt

This is by far the chicest men’s t-shirt. With such a long history, the polo is perhaps the most deserving t-shirt of its place in the urban man’s wardrobe. Historically, it began being used in the second half of the 1800s by fans of equestrian polo. In the 1960s, actors such as Alain Delon and Sean Connery popularized this type of t-shirt in classic films.

The collared t-shirt is the only one that can be worn with a blazer, especially in relaxed outfits. Add to it your favorite pair of jeans and suede loafers (or maybe some white sneakers), and you’re ready to go! If it’s cloudy outside, a trench coat can make the difference.

Color-wise, white is the most versatile choice, although shades like sky blue, pale pink, or beige are equally beloved. Some polo models come with a chest pocket, but you should avoid those! Others have raglan sleeves for extra arm mobility, though this detail usually raises the price.

2. The Crew Neck T-Shirt

The crew neck t-shirt originally came from military men’s underwear. In the 1960s, it became popular streetwear thanks to the slogans printed on it. In recent decades, it has turned into the universal choice for the summer season. To wear it with style, keep the following conditions in mind!

First, both solid and pastel shades are best. Surely, you don’t want to become a walking billboard advertising big brands. Second, for a casual look, it’s more stylish to wear the t-shirt untucked.

Additionally, avoid synthetic, shiny fabrics and tight cuts, no matter how “sculpted” you might be. And finally, stay away from crew neck t-shirts if you have a long, thin neck, because they don’t flatter you. Instead, the polo t-shirt is ideal.

3. The Henley T-Shirt

This is a hybrid between the first two types. It has buttons, like a polo, but lacks the collar, like a crew neck. Chronologically, it was the last to appear on the global market of t-shirts, and it has the advantage of giving off a “fresh vibe.”

In terms of color, you can go for neutral shades like sky blue, pale pink, gray, or white. Both aesthetically and functionally, it’s perfect for shorter men with short necks. The lack of a collar highlights that naturally short area. Generally, it is worn untucked with pants or jeans.

4. The V-Neck T-Shirt

Also known as the V-neck tee, this is the most relaxed type of t-shirt. A man oriented toward elegance should have strong reasons to wear this type!

Color-wise, it allows for a wider range of options than other t-shirt types. It can be paired with simple jeans, beige or navy suede loafers. If it’s chilly outside, a leather jacket and a pair of chinos can guarantee success. Avoid blazers, though!

As you’ve probably realized, men’s t-shirts barely make it into the world of elegance. Along with shorts, t-shirts are more of a functional piece than a refined one. That doesn’t mean they don’t deserve our attention — especially when no other option meets urgent needs.
