4 Rules to Follow to Wear a Vest with Style

The suit vest is one of the most underestimated pieces in the modern man’s wardrobe. Yet few realize just how versatile it can be! Today, men rarely wear three-piece suits, which has pushed the vest into the background. While it can be worn separately, many men shy away from doing so, unsure how to create unique combinations.

In this article, we’ll explain the 4 rules for wearing a suit vest to achieve a flawless look. You won’t believe what the fourth one is!

The vest is a sleeveless garment, often collarless, somewhat similar to the traditional Romanian peasant bodice. Although it first appeared in the 17th century, the vest gained popularity with British dandyism, when young men started wearing it like a corset. At the dawn of the last century, shirts were considered underwear, so men wore three-piece suits to cover as much as possible. After World War II, wearing a vest without a jacket became more common, creating increasingly relaxed combinations. Since the 1970s, the vest has also entered women’s wardrobes. Today, however, men seem to have relegated it to the shadows.

Rule 1: Wear a Fitted Vest

As mentioned above, the vest originally functioned as a corset! This corset was meant to slim the wearer’s silhouette. Even though today the vest is purely aesthetic, remember that a properly worn vest should follow the lines of your body. You can always adjust it using the back strap. However, when there’s too much extra material, tightening the strap will create unsightly folds. Visit your tailor and ask them to take in your vest for a perfect fit!

Rule 2: Avoid Belts With Pants

We know that Romanian men often view belts as a functional accessory. However, as noted HERE, ideally, your pants should sit perfectly at your waist without a belt. A belt “cuts” the outfit in two and creates disharmony. Remember that in the past, belts were only for soldiers’ weapons or workers’ tools. When it comes to vests, a belt is even more problematic: the buckle will peek out from under the vest, the fabric will bunch, wrinkles will form, and the overall look will be compromised!

Rule 3: Keep the Vest Buttoned

This follows from Rule 1. A corset should never be left open, right? Even more so when wearing a loose shirt underneath, a carefully buttoned vest can save you from looking sloppy.

Rule 4: Choose Creative Linings

Everyone knows the standard off-the-rack vests, with shiny polyester backs that smell of plastic. But there are alternatives! Try creative linings that aren’t too flashy but still unique. Opt for patterns like paisley, jacquard, or other classic designs that highlight your style. If your vest has a chest pocket, coordinate a pocket square with the lining to catch everyone’s eye! Keep the lower half of the vest simple to avoid going overboard. A patterned back is enough to add the elegance you need.
